Baklava

Ingredients

16 oz pkg phyllo dough, thawed

1 ¼ cup butter

1 lb chopped walnuts or pistachios (try pecans,yum!)

1 tsp cinnamon

1 cup sugar

2 tbs lemon juice

¾ cup water

½ cup honey


Thaw your dough overnight. Trim the dough to fit your baking pan. Cover dough with damp cloth to keep from drying out. Prepare your baking dish by buttering all sides.


Honey sauce instructions:

Take a medium sauce pan, combine sugar, honey, lemon juice and water and bring to a boil. Stir until sugar has melted or dissolved. Reduce heat to med/low. Keep on slow boil for another 4 minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and let cool.


Preheat oven to 325F

Ann cinnamon to chopped nuts. Place approx 10 sheets in your baking dish, one at a time. Brush each sheet with butter. After the 10th sheet spread about ⅔ cup of nut mixture. Now you will layer about 5 sheets of dough then add another nut layer. The top layer should be about 10 sheets of dough. Don’t forget to butter EVERY sheet!! Brush top with butter.

Cut pastry 1 ½ inches wide in a diagonal. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from oven and IMMEDIATELY pour the cooled syrup over hot pastry! It should sizzle!! SOOOOOOO GOOOOOD!!!! Let cool uncovered. Top with remaining nuts.
